The inner plates have an extra thickness of material in the hook region. With this type of hook, both the inner (hook) plates and the outer (containing) plates are load bearing. The inner plate transmit the load from the top connecting shackle pin to the hinge pin from which point the outer plates transmit the load to the lower shackle pin.
